Some people, toward the beginning of the new year (and February is still beginning-ish), find it useful to take stock of what the previous year has meant for them. • Relevancy of Client Status

    Amanda Brooks
    15 Jan 2010 | 12:35 am
One thing I’ve noticed again and again is that when men make online comments in any way supporting sex workers (like on news articles or major blogs), they always hasten to add that they have never seen a sex worker and have no need of it. Obviously, they believe client-stereotypes (e.g. all clients are ugly losers) and feel a strange need to pretend they’re not clients. I wonder why they even think the disclaimer is relevant — can’t they, as arguably intelligent people — support sex workers with or without vested interest? Why the need for qualifying their…

Judge Abraham Penn Jones ordered Andrew Young, the ex-aide of former Senator John Edwards, to turn over the sex tape on Friday. Young and his wife, Cheri, were at the Pittsboro, North Carolina court to contest a temporary restraining order forbidding them from disseminating the videotape. The judge found the Youngs in civil contempt of court and ordered them to give the court the tape and other materials they may have by 2:00PM this coming Wednesday. If they fail to comply, the couple could be jailed. According to court documents, the couple has said they possess “a video recording…

“I think I’ll have you tied up and suspended tonight,” Sir M told me when I greeted him at a recent dungeon party. This was to be another chapter in my training and I was grateful for the de-emphasis on pain and the focus, instead, on altered states. Rope bondage is an area of BDSM that attracts many admirers with the beauty and creativity of the craft, combined with the image of seeing a submissive completely helpless. A good rope practitioner knows how to lay the rope in an artful way to accentuate the body and personality of the one being bound. Rope bondage for suspension requires…

But we digress). So the guy has BDSM parties. Why is this a problem? “Zoning,” we’re…

  • Sex Nerds and Oversharers: Your Contribution to Important Sexuality Research is Needed!

    Audacia Ray
    1 Feb 2010 | 8:33 pm
I have always thought that research on sexuality is cool. Plus, having engaged in various kinds of research on sex, its presence (it being sex research, not actual sex) in my life allows me to make lots of puns (actual sex provides plenty of opportunities for punning as well). But in all seriousness, sexuality research is important, especially the good kind, done by good people. How many times have you read an article about the latest sexuality research report and been annoyed by not just the tone of the article, but the way the research is done? If you’re a thinking sex positive person…

Hi there superstars! For the past couple months, I've been bleeding for two weeks! Hurrah! I am currently on birth control (Loestrin 24 Fe, generic is Microgestin or Junel, etc.) and I take my pills on time every day. I have a theory that my cycle is either trying to sync up with my friend's (whose period is a week before mine) or the hormone amount in the Loestrin simply isn't enough to cover what I need.I'm on the Loestrin because it was helpful for my cramps (which are... horrible.) but it's honestly not worth it if I'm going to bleed for half the month (which makes it really sad when I…

I had sex yesterday, for the first time in about a month, with a new friend of mine. It wasn't the first time I had orgasmed in a month, nor the first time I had orgasmed with "assistance" from another person in a month... But... It was the first time in a WHILE that I had CRIED upon orgasm. It has only happened just a few times, and the last time could be anywhere from a year ago to three years ago (my memory is a little fuzzy.) I just couldn't help it, like as soon as I had an orgasm, I just broke down into tears - why is this happening to me??

Sorry fi this has been posted before, maybe I'm just not looking well enough. What texture is the inside of your vagina and is there anything that causes a specific texture? I was reading posts over at one of the men's health communities and they were discussing how the inside of a woman feels. This was interesting to me as the one time I had intense…

The classic Valentine's Day celebration is a romantic dinner, but that can be hard to pull off. First of all, restaurants are super crowded and it's hard to get reservations; many of them have prix fixe menus that limit your dining choices and the prix might be more than you want to pay. You can make dinner at home, sure, and candles and an elaborate menu ensure that it's different from any old home-cooked meal. If the idea of dinner just isn’t doing it for you but you still want to acknowledge the holiday, try out one of these alternatives.

Valentine’s Day. I’m married now, so I have no right to bitch about it, right? Wrong. I hate sitting there on V-day at work, watching others get flowers, and wondering why I didn’t. I know why. It’s because I hate having him spend the money on something that’ll die soon. And I hate that whole forced-recognition thing. But then I see flowers like these and I slightly change my mind: The ever-popular chocolates are also, IMO, stupid. It seems to me that Super Bowl Controversy is a sport unto itself. This year the controversy centers on an anti-abortion ad by Focus On The Family. The ad features football star Tim Tebow and his mother discussing her choice not to abort, despite medical advice that it might be best for her health, when she was pregnant with him.Focus on the Family is an exrtraordinarily regressive organization when it comes to women's rights and sexual freedom and I would not expect to like any ad of theirs. Here it is, yet another free link to a new piece by me on the high-class, smarty-pants, pay-as-you-go erotica site Filthy Gorgeous Things. This issue revolves around euphoria, and my piece, "The Gift of Euphoria," describes those times when you give others that ecstatic moment. It begins thusly:There is that moment. The body relaxes into a limp capitulation even as it suspends taut with anticipation. The eyes may close or they may widen in surprise, though the pupils go invariably round as pushpins. The mouth makes a little “o,” the circular call of cherubim, of succubae, of…

So my new piece on Filthy Gorgeous Things is live and open for your reading pleasure. The piece, which I've called "Hush," talks loudly, purplish and long about secrets. Here's the first paragraph:Secrets in and of themselves are sexy. Knowledge, especially knowledge that is personal and private, is sexy. Power is sexy. And secrets, those delightful, frisson-bearing scraps and orts of information, hold power. A secret told enough times becomes a story, and while stories hold pleasure and while stories carry power, a story lacks the whispering, murmuring, susurrating sexiness…

    The Virginity Project
    23 Jan 2010 | 3:43 am
I’ve told this story before but I’ll tell it again. I searched high and low for the prostitute virginity loss story. I phoned a friend – or ten – I practically advertised on the Internet at one point until I realized that it might look a bit iffy. No story, asides from my endless (and unrequited) search for the Muslim story has taken me on so many twisty turny paths as my search for the prostitute story. And then one day they started rolling in. For no reason. Just like buses. It’s all true what they say about buses. None come for days and then there’s a ten-car pile-up. At one…

Well now, seeing as we are passing tonight, not just from one year to the next but from one decade to another, here is an extra special treat. I don’t know what’s been happening lately, perhaps it is something in the stars, but I have been sent some fabulous stories of late. Not only that, but your ability to summarize your most intimate moments with such wit, verve and charm never cease to amaze me.Today’s story is from Tegan. She is almost nineteen years old and she lives in the Bible belt in the States. I’m not going to ramble on, partly because I am bushed but mainly because the…
  • The Vow - Part Two

    The Virginity Project
    13 Dec 2009 | 11:08 am
So, I promised to tell you the second part of last week’s story and here it is. Let’s recap. Our storyteller is twenty-three years old and she has not yet lost her virginity. She kept it because she made a childhood pact with two friends not to become a teenage statistic. No pregnancy, no nasty diseases and no boring boyfriend problems, at least until graduation. But what do you know, by the time graduation rolled around, she was the only that had bothered to keep the vow. Fast-forward five years, and she still hadn’t gotten around to letting go of it. Until now that is. There is little…

When I first read this story, I assumed that The Vow in question had been made in response to parental pressure. I was wrong: ‘Both of my parents knew about my vow and both of them, whom have not agreed on a single thing since their divorce in 1996, told me square in the face that I would not make it. Neither my mother, nor my father believed it was humanly possible to hold off till marriage. I think my parents are happy that I chose to abstain but I don't think it is because of the normal reasons. They just had one less worry in the world. I wouldn't be getting pregnant.’ No, I…

And then all hell breaks loose.  Which is an exaggeration but really, its not often that I get emailed a question that I’ve never been asked before: ‘Ms. MonroDoes a persons face change when they lose their virginity?  Thanks Karl’ Now, I don’t know if I have some weird kind of dyslexia but I completely misread this question the first…

    Jennifer Jones
    20 Jan 2010 | 6:45 am
In a world, that often worships wealth, beauty, prestige and power, I'm reminded of a simple quote that speaks to me of true greatness!"When I say it's you I like, I'm talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see or hear or touch. That deep part of you that allows you to stand for those things without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate, peace that rises triumphant over war, and justice that proves more powerful than greed."— Fred Rogers Greatness isn't about wealth, beauty, prestige, and power. Periodically I get some less than kind emails from people who seem to think I must hate men or have had some horrible experience with men hence I have an "issue."Not so... the truth is, (and as most readers recognize), I started this blog because I believe there are many fabulous men in this world who are not given a chance, and women who may have a difficult time recognizing the truly great men who are available. My hope is to help women see what makes a great guy and help them stay away from men who are abusive and cruel. In my opinion, the more women value themselves, and value the things…

We humans do like relationships but what is disconcerting is the idea that as long as a woman has a man all is well. Not so!Having a guy in your life should not be the dream; how about having a decent guy in your life?A great relationship is one where both partners are helping and supporting each other, sharing their lives together, bringing out the best in one another.Too often women seem to take whomever is available rather than pondering what is going on in her life as a result of the relationship. So here is a brief list of some things to…

If you are in an abusive relationship you are going to continually be hurt emotionally, physically, mentally, sexually or all of the above. Typically the abuse will escalate and increase so holding onto the idea that the relationship will improve is just prolonging the pain. It is not…

Today Memphis Flyer advice columnist Bianca Phillips answered a poly coming out question from a member of a polyamorous triad and did an excellent job. Thanks to my friend Nicholas for the tip about a happy poly moment on last night's The Daily Show.  This whole clip is pretty funny, at least it is if you enjoy the kind of editing that goes on where the questioner's questions aren't always what the interviewee was asked.  The poly part comes in at about 3:10.  Joy and George Reagan and George's unnamed girlfriend, the people being interviewed by comedian Jason Jones, appear to be the real deal. They also apparently agreed to get partly unclothed and climb under the sheets for a little three way kissing after Jason sets up the…

Is there a difference between sexual ideas that come from the genuine pursuit of sexual knowledge and pleasure and those that come from a marketing team or wannabe TV sexpert? You bet there is. Susie Bright has devoted her adult life to learning about sex and the human condition, and sharing her discoveries not only with friends and lovers but also with the general public through her non-fiction writing and work as an editor of erotica. For open minded and openhearted sexual exploration,…
  • Sex Tips for the Rest of Us – The Look and Sound of Desire

    4 Feb 2010 | 2:28 am
Most sex tips I read don't apply to me at all. They assume too much, about my body, about my gender, about what I want from sex. I could go on, and on. But instead, over the years, I've been compiling sex ideas that try not to assume or expect too much. I call them sex tips for the rest of us. Some, but not all of us, are aware when something turns us on. We might find ourselves just slightly more tuned in, or note a change in our bodies. It might be sudden and shocking or slow and subtle. Whether you're aware of it or not, how often do you spend time thinking about why something turns you…
  • Dr. Sandra Leiblum

    31 Jan 2010 | 4:01 pm
Sex therapist and researcher Dr. Sandra Leiblum passed away on Thursday. She was a well-known psychologist and sex researcher whose career spanned almost forty years. Leiblum was involved in over 130 clinical and research studies, and the editor or co-editor of ten books, including the now classic Principles and Practice of Sex Therapy. I never had the opportunity to meet or hear her speak, but colleagues and friends describe her as both an important contributor to the field of sexology and a warm and generous teacher, mentor and friend. Most recently Leiblum coined the term persistent…
  • A Sex Study I'd Like to See

    28 Jan 2010 | 4:01 pm
Last week I went a bit overboard complaining about the limits of quantitative social science research. Reading Tania Rabesandratana's article about Flibanserin in the Inkling got me going again. It was this quote from Petra Boynton in response to a Flibanserin researcher marking a difference between "internal" and "environmental" factors in sexual desire (as if such distinctions are ever fully possible): Dr. Petra would like to see Flibanserin pitted against precisely such "environmental factors." "Why not test the drug not only vs. placebo, but also vs. using a sex toy or lubricant,…
  • The Political Fall and Rise of Teen Pregnancy Rates in the U.S.

    27 Jan 2010 | 2:38 am
Yesterday the Guttmacher Institute released statistics on teen pregnancy rates showing that for the first time in almost a decade the pregnancy rate went up. Among girls 15 to 19, the rate increased by 3 percent from 2005 to 2007. Last May analysis of teen birth rates also showed a 5 percent increase from 2005 to 2007. Noting the differences in coverage of this release is like a study in how news is politicized as it's created. For example while most of coverage includes the fact that the Obama administration is moving away from abstinence-only programs in favor of interventions that have…

For Ruf, on his birthday. He hates Coldplay… but, if anybody fixed me, it was him. Right from the start, he promised me that he would make me feel beautiful. Show me what it was like to be loved. For three years, he was there, right behind me, building me up and putting me back together, only to watch my family pull me apart again but he couldn’t let himself fall in love with me. It is, now, almost a year since the strength of his support meant that I had become strong enough to start breaking the bonds that tied me to a man who could and would rip me to shreds with a cursory…

To the English, Twickenham is Rugby. The stadium’s first rugby match took place on October 2, 1909 between original tenants Harlequins, and Richmond. January 15, 1910 saw Twickenham’s first international, England vs Wales. To celebrate a century of English rugby at Twickenham, this afternoon, England strode out onto the famous turf to face Wales in the RBS 6 Nations Championship. It was a fabulous day, with England arriving onto the pitch dressed in a new kit that was very similar to that worn by their predecessors all those years ago. Made in state-of-the-art modern fabrics but bearing…

  • John Edwards’ Situation Looks Bleak – Can It Be Saved?

    Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil
    8 Feb 2010 | 4:00 pm
By now, the news of John Edwards’ admittance to fathering a child with a woman working on his campaign has hit the airwaves and is making its way around the media. Talk shows, news programs, morning shows ~ everyone is riffing off of this admission and everyone has something to say about it. One thing seems to be the general consensus: that following Edwards’ earlier admission to having an affair with this woman, yet denying paternity of the father, no one is actually surprised he’s reneged on this earlier claim. Can John Edwards’ Marriage Be Saved? Elizabeth has said…

Do we talk to them about sex? Here are some answers to your most personal questions. Question: I have a question that’s been burning on my mind ever since I started following you on YT. Immediately, he shared with me that earlier in the day a friend of his had come in to mail something and the friend’s response to the question, “Did you have a good Christmas?” was, “My wife divorced me after 27 years.” Not even knowing the gentleman in question, I was stunned and said, “Ouch! 7 Feb 2010 | 9:00 am
One social stigma that has stuck around for years is that men are sexually ravenous, while women don’t really have a sexual appetite at all. Is this true? Are men the only ones who want sex and women just go along with it to make their man happy or to have babies? Or can women want and enjoy sex as much as a man? Question: Is it normal for a woman to have an insatiable sexual appetite, and to be able to separate sex from emotion like a man? –Facebook Question Click here to view the embedded video. I guess one of the reasons I'm me is because I do things like this. I don't have New Year's Resolutions. I have a New Year's Motto. This isn't just a wishy-washy little promise that I have no intention of keeping. No, a Motto represents the foundation upon which all of my choices for the coming year rest. It's a belief system. And, just like any motto, it has to ring perfectly true if I expect anyone - especially me- to follow it.Some years I can never quite settle on one. So I just don't. Those are usually the years I tried to kid myself into thinking that I will start cooking and eating…

Here goes. There is something truly thrilling when you unwrap a gift from your boyfriend (I'm sure this applies to husbands and all sorts of other romantic attachments) and find yourself holding a velvet box containing some sort of jewelry....Let me stop you there for a second. This is not an engagement ring. Or any ring for that matter. And I knew that and was in no way expecting one (though I wouldn't mind one either:-). Quite unexpectedly, one of the things I’ve found the most uncomfortable and difficult when it comes to my relationship with Aiden, is being really emotionally vulnerable with him. I can be physically vulnerable, that doesn’t scare me at all, but when it comes to talking about my feelings, or God forbid, crying in front of him (the HORRORS!) I would rather eat a pail of sand. I’ve always had kind of a hang up about crying in front of people.  My family really frowned on the shedding of tears, even during moments when it seemed like the appropriate response.  I very clearly…

We just love us some anal toys around here, and the Lelo Bob is no exception.  Made entirely of satiny silicone, this is the ideal toy for butt-play beginners. It provides fantastic stimulation, and although it’s made of silicone, is rigid enough to make insertion easy. Due to it’s diminutive size and prostate-friendly shape, it’s perfect for men who are curious about anal toys, or for those who don’t like anything too large back there.  Women may also…

The short answer is no.   Here's why. 1. Soul mates can't possibly exist because of the fact that if there is only one woman for every man who completes her/him then what in the name of God did people do before the invention of the motor car? It is difficult thought, because it takes me so long to orgasm and his lengthy efforts so often leave both of us frustrated that I would rather just let him fuck me and get it over with. It’s not fair. It is so easy for him to cum and he gets to do it so often. It is hard not to feel some resentment towards him even though he really does try. He says he enjoys eating me out, and I believe him, but sometimes he is just not good at it. It doesn’t…

My sex toys include rubber/silicon dildos and a vibrator. A: The quick answer, according to the web site www.virtualtourist.com, is that sex toys are prohibited by the Saudi Arabian government and you will not be allowed to bring them into the country along with alcohol, pork, adult movies, or statues of animal or human form. In general, traveling by airplane with sex toys may be problematic at best and will often add complications to your…
  • Is it ok to have rape fantasies?

    Lil'Miss B
    30 Dec 2009 | 8:05 pm
Q: I am a woman with a question I don’t exactly know how to phrase. It has to do with what excites me, sexually. It doesn’t have to do with typical bondage/S&M type fetishes, which I have explored actively throughout my life and have come to accept as not inherently bad for me. This interest it seems, however, has just been a cover up for what I’m really interested in. I’ve had rape fantasies for a long time, which I have read is relatively common for women, so I never worried about it. I very much enjoy rape themed porn, the more believable and realistic, the better. What…

  • Teen Mom: Who Are You Calling a Whore?

    Sex, Etc.
    29 Jan 2010 | 11:52 am
I was talking with some of my friends about MTV’s Teen Mom a few weeks ago, and one of them said, “They’re all whores.” My friend wasn’t calling the guys who the girls had sex with whores, just the girls—not that anyone deserves to be called a whore. I was really surprised and upset that my friend said this. Why is it that if you’re a teen mother you’re a whore? I don’t hear people calling 20-something-year-old mothers whores, even though they have unplanned pregnancies too. People—teens and adults—make mistakes and birth control fails.
  • Calling All Artists: Promote Safer Sex!

    Sex, Etc.
    21 Jan 2010 | 2:52 pm
Condoms, when used correctly, help prevent unplanned pregnancies, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Condoms can be an important part of practicing safer sex, and here at Sex, Etc. we encourage you to make condoms fun. Sex, Etc. is not the only place promoting condom use; in fact, a whole city is promoting it! New York City’s Health Department gives away more than 40 million free condoms a year. Those free condoms have a package specifically designed for New York City, a black wrapper based on the city’s subway motif. Although that design is still loved,…

    Sex, Etc.
    7 Dec 2009 | 9:20 am
Do you know anyone who has come to school naked? Probably not, but maybe you do know people at your school who have been seen naked because they’ve sexted—shared nude photos or videos of themselves via text or online. Many teens believe that the only person viewing the message is the person they send it to, however, with the click of a button, the sext can easily be shared with many others. Although it may seem harmless, there can be negative consequences for sexting. Who would want a college admissions officer or potential employer to make a decision about you after seeing your nude…
  • Two Things You Can Do—Not Just on World AIDS Day

    Sex, Etc.
    1 Dec 2009 | 11:20 am
World AIDS Day is held once a year, every year, on December 1. While HIV/AIDS is a daily reality that needs to be discussed and addressed, this is one particular day when people take extra time to get educated, get tested and remember the over 33 million people worldwide, living with HIV/AIDS. AIDS-related deaths have been decreasing over the past couple of decades for two very good reasons: knowledge and treatment. Yet, HIV/AIDS still has no cure. This World AIDS Day, we encourage you to remember that there’s a long way to go in developing a cure for HIV and overcoming the social…
  • The Real “Fright” about High Teen STD Rates

    Sex, Etc.
    25 Nov 2009 | 6:53 pm
I spoke to Montel Williams on his Air America show Montel Across America, last Thursday. We talked about the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance, 2008, which was released last week. The CDC’s report found that STDs, such as chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhea, are on the rise. And why is this relevant to us? Because the report found that there are over 19 million new STD infections each year and almost half of them occur in young people who are 15 to 24 years old. Montel, much like other adults who’ve been…

I’ve been exploring D/s this year and I’ve been fascinated by the spanking part. Like, why do people get into it and why is it such a turn on, especially for her? Like most vanilla peeps, there was a point where I thought spanking was lame, even ridiculous. Now I love it and so do my partners. To shed some insight on the subject, I asked excellent sex and kink blogger The Beautiful Kind to share her thoughts on the subject. Please check out her blog for more goodness (NSFW). Also be sure to check back later this week when we have Eathan from idatewhite.com kinking it up. Enjoy!

    2 Feb 2010 | 12:40 pm
Lance and I got into a spirited debate in the comments of a recent post about whether or not parents should shoulder the costs for their children to go to college.  Now, this issue is moot for me for a couple reasons: I’m not having children, and Jake and I have $100K in student loan debt – APIECE – so between funding our retirement accounts (we got a late start on that, too, since we were already about 30) and paying off our own debts, there’s no way we could afford to send our kids to college even if we had any. However, it does deserve consideration as a thought…

TFIG you bastardz! As usual, H&L only brings you the very best of the web. Tennessee State Trooper pulls over hot porn star, gets mad BJ in the squad car, takes video, ends up on blog, you can guess the rest. Porn Star, aka Barbie Cummings, still gets nailed for $180 speeding ticket. Is that move douchey or not douchey? You decide. Seriously, you can’t make this stuff up. Quote of the week: “I feel bad for him,” said Cummings. “That’s his job, and now he’s facing criminal charges. But at least he got (oral sex) out of it.” See the article at ABCNews.com.

When I arrived in London, it was made clear to me that the sky is falling. The stock market dropped, we’re entering a recession, and the American downswing will bring Europe down with it. The current president is just shy of nominating his horse as consul and the egregiously overpaid managers of funds – who form the bulk of my clientele – are about to have a good reason to cover their conspicuous displays of indulgence. There’s been something in the air for a year now, but it’s getting a little darker. It just feels like we’re due for a backlash, a backlash…

Will the world ever be ready for the older woman, younger man equation? Carnival Cruise Lines says no, but recently some cougars rocked the boat, making it very clear, they’re not about to be thrown overboard. There’s this notion among some feminists that the patriarchy uses all its power to suppress knowledge about female sexuality and the full extent of its power. Knowledge of said female power being enough to disturb world order and even the whole universe. (Sort of similar to knowledge that E=mc2, which if memory serves came out of a man, but that’s another story.)…
